Snowstorm of Doubt and Grace is a collection of poems; lyrics and reflections that are full of contrasts and observations about life and the strange and wonderful people we meet every day on that journey, whether it is sitting in a coffee shop; down the street or walking along a sandy beach. It embraces social issues such as homelessness; domestic abuse and alcoholism by looking at them through the eyes of those who are suffering. Ironically, it has been out of our own personal trials, that we have experienced the redemptive bond of both words and family.

A son and his mother, Ken and Caitriona Hume wrote it together, one wracked with doubt; the other enamoured by grace. The contrasts however don’t end there, as the book proceeds to look at life and death; romance and heartbreak; hopes and dreams; peace and conflict; happiness and regret; faith and the loss of. Ultimately, it’s our own faltering steps on the road to mutual self-discovery that shone a bright light upon the strengths and weaknesses of our fragile human nature. That in turn has provided the catalyst to break out of our self-imposed creative cocoons and begin the transformation into the butterfly’s we know we can be.

The Coffee Shop And Me

The coffee shop and me
Met some years ago
When I was walking by
It’s portal to another world
The sweet smelling aroma
Grabbed me by the nose
And dragged me inside
To sample it’s caffiene delights
And now, we’re best of friends

The coffee shop and me
We meet together anytime
To conspire, to commune
In reflective caffeinated bliss
With my notepad and pen
People come and people go
We listen and observe
With outstretched senses
In this coffee shop of ideas

Hide Me

Hide me behind the laurels of the world
Out of sight of would-be-plaudits
Keep me out of view, save that of knowing my own light

Where is there to hide in a world
That seeks to see itself in its own glory
With little knowledge of whence it came?

Can you find a place for me
Which seeks not to magnify its own greatness
But knows its place among the stars?

It’s there amid the dross of egoism
A treasure hidden in a world where self’s alive
A humble jewel in a world where soul has died
